What ADV Riders Get WRONG About Protective Gear

#protectivegear #advrider #rideadventures

︾ Hey Adventure Riders,
Ever wonder if you’re actually protected out there—or just pretending to be? In this quick chat, Eric Lang and Andrew Murray from RIDE Adventures break down two of the biggest mistakes ADV riders make with their protective gear… and yep, both involve boots.

New riders often blow their budget on helmets and jackets, then settle for hiking boots or “adventure” boots that barely protect against a 500-pound bike. Eric and Andrew explain how to balance your budget, what real protection looks like, and why stiff, plastic-heavy boots are your best friend when gravity wins.

🦶 Protect your 56 bones, 33 joints, and 120 ligaments — skip the hospital bills and learn how to gear up the right way.

✅ Watch now to find out what ADV riders keep getting wrong — and how to fix it before your next ride.

  1. Splurge on the helmet.
A $200 helmet does NOT protect you “just as well” as a more expensive one.

My $200 helmet left me with 6 broken bones in my face and a major TBI and amnesia so I was not able to remember the last 6 months.

Spend about $400 and get some type of carbon fiber helmet.

My PVC chin bar split in half on impact.

  2. Ask this guy (me) with a broken 5th metatarsal in his right foot, about boots. I thought a good quality hiking boot was good enough for just street riding. WRONG! It was actually worse. Soft ground would have just allowed my foot to sink into the ground a bit. But on pavement it got crushed. After a radical surgery and 5 months I’m finally able to walk straight again, but carefully. I’ve been riding cautiously for 3 months but I’m not doing any serious riding for another 3 months and with a pair of good quality 5-700 dollar boots. Lesson learned. I’m not riding Harley’s anymore. ADVs are a whole new game. Your feet are under you, not in front of you.

  3. Speaking as a noob who bought the Forma boots just like everybody else. A good piece of advice I picked up was look for a boot with four buckles. That is a dirt boot. A boot with three buckles is an ” adventure” boot.

  4. Sound Advice. I will take it. Just bought my 1st “ ADV Bike…. Suzuki V-Strom.
I always hated the concept of these Gargantuan “ Off-Road Bikes. I’m coming off a WR 250 dual sport that has served me well for years for on/off road rides .
Long story short, V-Storms are Legendary, and I got a deal on a LOADED Beauty I just couldn’t pass up and I LOVE the thought of a 5+ Gallon Tank-
That’s what pushed me over the edge to buy it… Not filling up every 80 miles is gonna be F**Kin Awesome 😃❗️
I sold bikes for 30+ yrs (retired) and I would NEVER skimp on gear… Too Important man.
I lived by that rule and sold more customers on that philosophy than I can recall.
I was just looking at a pair of KLIM ADV Boots that don’t seem to be much more than hiking boots with a cool lacing system 🤔
I want something a little more comfortable than my MX boots, but with similar protection.
Anyhow, Great Post – Thanks ✅
