  1. Only stupid ppl. would consider burning green wood. actually, cleaning up the ground of dead wood is good for removing combustible material in case of fire.dont make a big fire just because theres a lot of wood.n the core of trees is for “starting”a fire, not for the fire.

  2. Depends on what I am doing and how my feet are doing, I bring boots and shoes to get the best of both worlds on long hikes, because the shoes aren’t very heavy and I was going to wear boots anyway.

  3. I listen to hours of your podcasts, but the whole trail runners vs boots thing is such a dead debate Kyle and feels like engagement baiting at this point. Anyone with any modicum of sense knows that they serve completely different purposes for completely different objectives, terrain and conditions. It’s disingenuous to say otherwise. Trail runners are great and I love a pair of Altras as much as the next person, but they aren’t made for carrying loads, aren’t made for abrasion, could easily fail in the middle of batshit-nowhere etc etc. There’s also not only 2 options. Approach shoes and things like Salewa Wildfire etc also fill a notable gap. If you need 5 pairs of shoes for a thru-hike, they aren’t fit for purpose… Much like if I needed 5 spoons to eat a stew. Get a better spoon.
I’d almost certainly wear trail runners on the PCT in summer too, but using vague brackets like ‘backpacking’ rather than specifically ‘ultralight, fair-weather, easy-terrain thru-hiking’ just makes you wrong in this case ๐Ÿค™โœŒ๏ธ
